And We’re SoCal

We have been off traveling the globe trying to find the best places to paraglide as well as other fun activities. Yes, I know it might be hard to believe but, we actually do things other than paraglide. We are currently spending some time in beautiful Southern California. Australia will always be home and has, in my humble opinion, the best gliding and most beautiful scenery in the world. But the more we explore SoCal and all it has to offer we are falling in love with this place. There is amazing kayaking in Long Beach, hiking in the Mountains and the High Desert, windsurfing in Ventura, skydiving in the Desert, snowboarding in the Mountains.

Simi Valley CA

Our time here, based in Los Angeles and the outlying areas has been a wonderful and an amazing adventure. It’s been almost all good times and a few close calls that luckily everyone walked away from unharmed, well maybe a few scratches but nothing serious. The first was our resident dog JoJo, who was bit on the nose by a neighbor’s dog Freckles. We think she might be pregnant and having some mood swings so we’ll let her slide. Shame she isn’t fixed but that’s an article for another day.

The other incident is gliding related. We were up in Simi Valley scouting out locations for a day of gliding. It turns out that a fellow glider had a very unfortunate incident with tree and some lines. He was having some equipment failure, was forced down to a very low altitude and well, we probably don’t have to tell you the rest. He made it down ok was able to undo his harness and walk away and climb down the base of the tree. Like I said earlier, only a few scratches and that’s about it. So happy that he wasn’t seriously hurt. Of all things, and of all the places to have to have an emergency landing, this guy was lucky there was a crew of tree trimming guys working not too far away. They were apparently just down the road, saw what was going on and came over to help get his rig out of the tree with their boom truck. It was quite a sight to see and we all did what we could to help out a fellow enthusiast.

I will say that that made me check, double and triple check all of my gear. Not that I don’t already but my piece of advice from that day was always buy the best gear and equipment you can afford and always keep it well maintained. Ok, so on to happier things. Next week we are going to check out the hot springs. That should be a great day. Til next time.

Eden 5 by MACPARA

The Eden 5 by MACPARA

Welcome to Paragliding Australia’s official review on the Eden 5 b MACPARA.  This amazing device came out in 2015 and it was developed by MACPARA.

Screen Shot 2016-08-22 at 1.47.56 PMMACPARA has truly done it this time with the gentle inflation with the Eden 5.  It is very easy to produce energy and make it right to your setting whenever you want, quick.  If you need to go slower Eden 5 is there, if you want to go faster and beat some friends, that’s the Eden 5 speciality.  It’s a very unlikely chance it to overshoot and it is only a tiny bit of tension on the brake.  This is enough to keep it well in place meaning you are only a couple steps from takeoff.

While flying this masterpiece, the Eden 5 has a lot of what we call inner pressure.  What is great with this device is the canopy is arched all the way to the sides, and the brake is extremely useful, reliable, and effective.Screen Shot 2016-08-22 at 1.48.24 PM

In the Air

While in the sky the beast is extremely light and easy to maneuver.  Keeping pressure on the break will make sure that it is smooth so that turbulence wont effect your flight.  The turns are almost perfect because of the coordination put into the glider, it almost feels natural.  This makes the eden 5 one of the best standard gliders.  It also means that the glider can maneuver at the cloud-base.

Eden 5 is made to be flown with a motor because of it’s very low sink rate it makes take off extremely easy.  Eden 5 was tested to be made with a Paramotor but also works well without it.  A standard motor would be best for experiencing the qualities the Eden 5 by MACPARA.

paragliding-11Welcome to Paragliding Australia, My name is Austin, an experienced glider from the roots of Australia.  Today we’re going to start off with a nice story about Paragliding that happened when I was a kid.  Back in the day my parents used to take me to the beach to fly kites – when one day all of a sudden I saw what I thought was a man flying across the sky with his own kite.  From then on I was determined to become that man that could fly across the sky with ease.  When I turned 18 I saved up enough for my first paragliding rental & lesson, this was something I kept on doing about once a month.

By the time  was 25, Paragliding was my life was made up of paragliding.  I would go about three times a week with my own paraglide that I had been saving up for.  The paraglider was from an sports shop right near the beach & I spent $4500 which was a good price for a starter glider.  At 27 is when I got my first job working for a paragliding company 20 minutes from the house.  The company was there to sell, rent, and teach people to paraglide, I was stuck selling over priced paraglide’s that never got sold.  Most of the time I would have to help at the rental station to get stuff done.  When one of the Paraglide Instructors died, R.I.P, I was surprised to hear that I would be teaching new gliders which involves strapping people to yourself and flying with them across the sky.  I was also surprised to hear that I would become the managing the instructors at the company.  I worked there for another 2 years when I finally decided to quit in search for a job that I like.  So far, I’ve been vacationing, traveling, & doing thing to occupy my time.

So here I am at 30 years old writing about my experiences gliding.  This involves me opening up and tell you all the tips and tricks, positives & negatives, & if this is the right sport for you.  Paragliding is meant for the extreme people that have tried everything and basketball, soccer, & baseball just don’t seem like it’s enough for them.  Gliders are a rare breed of species that are willing to jump of mountains and risk their life just for the moment.
